Smoking cessation is associated with pleasure and high mood
many smokers believe that giving up smoking will make life difficult, but the study now finds that successful smoking cessation is associated with a greater sense of pleasure and high emotion, which provides another good reason for smokers to quit smoking. The study, conducted by
Brown University, was published in Nicotine.Amp; Tobacco Research magazine, and evaluated 236 male and female smokers before and after smoking cessation. The researchers first tested the subjects with a standardized test of depressive symptoms, and then gave them guidance on smoking cessation and then sent them nicotine patches to quit smoking. At the 2, 8, 16 and 28 weeks after starting smoking cessation, they were given further counseling regardless of whether they were still smoking.
researchers found that people who quit smoking successfully, even for a short period of time, reported a very high mental state at the time of examination, while smokers reported that their emotions were lower than they were at the start of the study. The people who quit smoking quickly and never avoided smoking (99 people) were the lowest among all the subjects, while those who did not smoke during the whole period had the highest pleasure.
this result is very convincing, but the method adopted by the researchers still has reason to be questioned. All 236 subjects who received the study were also serious alcoholics. For emotional research, alcohol may be the biggest confusing variable. Christopher Kahler, the main researcher, says it is important to use serious alcoholics as subjects, because the rate of smoking cessation in the general population is low, and the recovery of smoking after smoking is often associated with alcohol. But he pointed out that they did not observe the correlation between alcohol consumption and depressive symptoms, because most subjects continued drinking throughout the study period.
Kahler believes that the results of the study encourage smokers to consider smoking cessation: "people used to think that smoking is because it can fight depression, and if you quit smoking, it may cause depression." Surprisingly, the actual test of smokers' mood found that even if the success of smoking cessation lasted only a short period of time, they had reported a reduction in depressive symptoms.
there are more and more reasons for giving up smoking. Smokers should give up smoking in the end.
