Antibiotics can cause intestinal obstruction in infants
an increase in the risk of an uncommon intestinal obstruction, intussusception, in infants and young children taking antibiotics. However, this conclusion does not mean that antibiotics will cause intussusception, but it is one of the factors contributing to the disease in infants and children, so it may become one of the reasons for the use of antibiotics carefully.
"intussusception is the most common intestinal obstruction in children aged 3 months, and we are the first to think that antibiotics may be one of the risk factors for intussusception," Spiro (DavidM.Spiro), the first author, told Reuters, "this conclusion should be stressed to parents and pediatricians, only in absolute necessity. It is time to use antibiotics wisely. There are still unknown reasons for intussusception. A study has claimed that the incidence of this disease in the United States is 1/5000.
since antibiotics can affect intestinal activity, Spiro and colleagues have begun to study whether the use of antibiotics has affected the risk of intussusception, which has not been done before. They compared 93 children with intussusception with 353 children who were treated for trauma. In the January Journal of Pediatrics and adolescent medicine, the authors reported that children who took antibiotics were 4 times more likely to suffer from intestinal obstruction than those who did not, and those who had used cephalosporins were at the highest risk, more than 20 times. Children who used antibiotics - mostly due to otitis media - had 1/4 developed into intestinal obstruction within 48 hours.
but Spiro and colleagues pointed out that more research is needed to confirm this conclusion.
