a simple and generous table, a classic carvings wardrobe, and the tables and chairs that have been washed through the years. These old Ming furniture are the furnishings of the 62 year old carpenter Xu Guangxiang's home and made by his own hands.
yesterday, the reporter came to the village of city corner lane, Dong Jia town, Ji'nan, and in the old carpenter's Xu Guangxiang house, he witnessed the process of using old craft, an axe and a chisel of old furniture.
Xu Guangxiang has been a carpenter since he was 18 years old. He is a seventh generation descendant. However, with the change of society, people engaged in traditional furniture production have been reduced, and many people have turned into "new carpenters" in order to adapt to the social development, and the traditional "old carpenters" are few. At present, the art of Ming style traditional furniture is on the verge of being lost.
"it's all machine work now, young people don't want to do it, and they can't earn money, it's also slow work. So far, there's no apprentice on the door." Xu Guangxiang sighs the airways. Originally he hoped his son could inherit the craft, but under the pressure of life, he had to turn around and give up.
facing these, Xu Guangxiang has great sadness in his heart. "He is old enough to know that he can persist in this craft for a few years..." sighed his wife.
