in April 30, 1919, Hu Shi represented the Peking University and Tao Xingzhi on behalf of the Peking University and Tao Xingzhi on behalf of the Jiangsu Provincial Education Association. Together with the famous American pragmatist educator and philosopher Dewey at the Shanghai dock. Since then, Dewey has lived in China for more than two years and has covered more than 10 provinces in China. More than 200 lectures have been made in China, which has greatly influenced the intellectual and educational circles in all parts of China (including Ji'nan).

Dewey came to Ji'nan for the first time in December 24, 1919, accompanied by Hu Shi and served as translator. It is very funny that on the same day, the authorities in Beijing even received the telegram sent by the Shandong provincial governor, saying they refused Dewey and his party to come to Ji'nan. But when Dewey came to Ji'nan, both the governor and the governor sent their representatives to welcome them. They said, "please give them a speech, and they are not natural; but since they have come, they are welcome."
second days after arriving in Ji'nan, Dewey made a lecture on the principle of education in the Shandong provincial council, and Mrs. Dewey made a speech entitled "women's education". In December 29th, Dewey made his last speech at the Ji'nan academic lecture in Ji'nan. The title was "new outlook on life", but when he advertised in the newspaper, he avoided the "new" word. It only wrote the "outlook on life" three words. "New" was not added until the lecture. This speech is also translated by Hu Shi. The main idea is that people should cope with the environment and conquer nature and live. The environment is different, the current changes, the methods we deal with, the tools of Conquest are also changed, so our outlook on life is moving, not dead; it is constantly evolving, not unchanging; it is to be able to create, not only conservative. On the night of
, Ji'nan elementary and middle school staff will hold talks to entertain Dewey. At the reception, Yuan Daochong, the director of the Education Hall of Shandong, was not satisfied with Dewey's "new outlook on life" on the same day, saying that the degree of the listener was not enough. For example, the old can not be exhausted, the education should teach the students to follow the law, the action of the students can not be derailed, otherwise, it should be advocated to make them new, that is still clear. Yuan Daochong's remarks were refuted by Hu Shi, and Hu Shi believed that the idea of "new" was not meant to overthrow the old one, but to separate the old "national quintessence" and the "national residue" that should be preserved by a critical attitude. Life is to teach him to create, not to teach him to imitate. Hu Shi's remarks were warmly welcomed by the audience. After that, Yi family asked Dewey to watch the new play. However, at the second day of Dewey and others leaving Ji'nan, at a temporary meeting held in the Shandong provincial council, a member of the Council rose to ask, "who is called Du Weilai?" Why do you use the meeting without the General Assembly? Whoever is in the name of Parliament has to be put up. Otherwise, I'll call a couple of prostitutes tomorrow to open the dishes here. " This shows the conflict between Ji'nan and the old.
some of the previous works on Dewey's trip to China were almost followed by the saying that in July 11, 1921, Dewey ended his two years and two months lecture in China and returned to the United States in Beijing. In fact, in July 11, 1921, Dewey, who left Beijing, did not leave China and return to the United States. Instead, he returned to Ji'nan.

the reason for Dewey's arrival in Ji'nan is this: in the summer of 1921, the Education Hall of Shandong planned to take the summer vacation, organize the Summer Seminar, and invited scholars from all fields of the domestic education field to speak to Ji'nan. After learning that Dewey would take the road to Qingdao and transfer to Japan, the Shandong education department immediately sent an invitation to Dewey. Dewey, who is about to leave China, pays much attention to the lecture, which was originally scheduled to come to Ji'nan in early July, and then failed to make a trip due to a succession of events in Beijing to participate in the marriage and the National Day commemoration.
at 10 in the morning of July 11th, the Dewey family, accompanied by Wang Zhuoran, a Beijing high teacher research scientist, left Beijing by train and went to Ji'nan by train, and Hu Shi waited for the station to see off. In the afternoon, Dewey and his party arrived in Ji'nan again, and were warmly welcomed by representatives from all walks of life in Ji'nan. Dewey and others are still living in the stone hotel, which is crossing the two road intersection. On the 12 day, representatives from all walks of life in Ji'nan invited Dewey and his party to visit Daming Lake. At that time, he had just arrived in Ji'nan's "Min Zhi daily" and interviewed with reporters as a reporter. He took a group photo at the Lake Pavilion and Dewey. That night, all circles in Ji'nan hosted a banquet in the elegant garden to welcome Dewey and his party. On the 13 day, the Dewey family, accompanied by Wang Zhuoran and others, traveled from Ji'nan to Taishan and Qufu, and Wang Leping, the manager of the daily administration daily, also followed the name of the hostess in the Education Hall.
about 17 days, Dewey and his party returned to Ji'nan and began speaking in Ji'nan at the invitation of the Shandong education department. Compared with his first speech in Ji'nan, Dewey's speech was deeply valued by the educational circles in Shandong. Dewey made 6 speeches in Ji'nan, including the work of the educator, the elements of the education society, the relationship between the school subjects and the society, the administrative and social relations of the school, the elements of the psychology of education and the relationship between the school and the society. In addition, Dewey's wife made two speeches. At that time, Ji'nan's "Min Zhi daily" published Dewey's speech.
Dewey stayed in Ji'nan for 9 days and 10 nights before and after two times, and did not leave Ji'nan until 25, and arrived in Qingdao on the same day. In Qingdao, Dewey held talks with local people and visited the scenic spots in Qingdao. He left Qingdao in August 2nd and returned to Japan by Japan.
